Who Is It For
This camcorder is for you if:
This camcorder is a great entry point for vloggers and home video recordings.
You want to record your Youtube videos in 4K.
You are a beginner who doesn’t want to break the bank.
It is a good alternative over the Sony HDR-PJ170 or the GoPro HERO .
What We Love About It
It’s easy to use:
This camcorder is very user friendly. It has a clean and simple interface with an intuitive menu structure which makes recording quick and easy. It also has an ability to turn on the camcorder by pressing its power button for 2 seconds. The camera will turn off after 20 seconds of inactivity which will help you save battery life. What is more, this handycam comes with an app that you can use to connect your smartphone and the camcorder for remote control.
It has a built-in wifi. Which will definitely come in handy when recording or streaming live video. It also supports adding an external mic via the mini jack.
It has clean and clear audio:
During our tests we found that it has very clear audio even in noisy environments without having to use additional equipment. This is because the camcorder has a built in stereo mic with noise cancellation and echo cancellation features.
It has 4k video capabilities:
It’s one of the only camcorders that can produce 4k video despite its simple type interface. It can record video in high definition as well. You shouldn’t, however, expect all the benefits of 4k recording with this camcorder as it only records at 1920 x 1080 so you don’t get any sharper output when using this camera for watching videos or editing.
What Could Be Improved
Its battery life:
The battery life isn’t too spectacular as it is only capable of recording about 90 minutes of 4k video per charge. If you are planning on using this camcorder for extended periods then getting additional batteries is highly recommended. The best option is to make sure you are using the best camcorder batteries available for extended periods of use in which case.
How It Did In Our Tests
First, we will go over the video quality we recorded and captured with this handycam. We tested its vlog capabilities by recording a half hour vlogg on a bright sunny day. We captured both 1080p60 and 4k videos. The camcorder also records at a bitrate of 200Mb/s which is average for the price. The 4k camera has a smaller file size at 2.1GBs so it is good for normal videos. The camcorder also has a bitrate of 100Mb/s which is at the low end for the price.
We also tested its audio quality by recording an interview on the street. It did an excellent job recording clear audio without any issues at all.
Bottom Line
The Sony HDR-CX240 is a great entry level camcorder. The 4k capability is its main selling point, but this camcorder also has crisp and clean HD recording capabilities as well as built in noise cancellation. Although its battery life could be better. Overall, the Sony HDR-CX240 is a great camcorder for uploading your vlogs to YouTube if you are a beginner or looking for a great home video recorder.
