Best Low Light Canon Camera

I shoot in a ton of low light conditions and early in my career I wasted a lot of time using a camera not up to the challenge. Lucky for you I can save you wasting your time and help you improve your low light shots by getting one of the top Canon models for shooting in poor lighting. Don’t forget to also check out my recommendations for the best low light Canon lens as well.

Canon EOS-1DX Mark II

This is without a doubt the best Canon has to offer when it comes to shooting in low light. The 1DX is designed with everything you need to take your night or low light sessions to the pinnacle of image quality. The lightning quick AF works flawlessly even when the lights are down. It also comes with top of the line image processing ensuring that every shot you take is a keeper. This camera is not for the hobbyist, it is a pro quality machine with a price tag to match. If it is outside of your budget don’t worry as there are more cost friendly models below that will serve you great but if you have the money to invest, this Canon is the one you need.

Canon 5D Mark IV

Outside of the premium priced 1DX, this is the best low light Canon camera on the market right now. The 5D Mark IV is in my personal camera rotation and it never lets me down when shooting in poor lighting. I have a number of lenses I like to pair it with but no matter what you currently have available this model won’t let you down either. It offers impressive image quality that will provide you with tons of eye popping shots while also providing exceptional AF even in lower light environments. If you take the 1DX out of the running, this is the best Canon low light camera I’ve used.

Canon EOS 6D

When it first came out, the 6D wasn’t as refined when shooting in low light but those issues are a thing of the past. This camera now offers excellent performance and has garnered a passionate following. It comes in at a fairly reasonable price and out performs it’s price point in many respects. The AF performs almost as well as the Canon above and is up to the task of capturing your subjects even at night. It also provides with some excellent image quality that is comparable to higher priced cameras on the market. While I would still take the two above over the 6D, if those are not your style then this is an exceptional alternative for you.

Canon 80D

The Canon 80D is a great option if you are looking for a crop sensor camera as it comes with the great performance of the APS-C image sensor. It offers high ISO and actually performs better than the Canon 6D above. The AF isn’t as quick but it still holds up and won’t let you down. What this all means is that the image quality is not quite as high as the cameras above, but at a crop sensor price you can still achieve excellent results. This camera is where I consider the serious hobbyist with budget limits should go. It really provides a ton of bang for your buck and while not pro level, it still is a solid performer that is fun to shoot with.

Canon Rebel T7

If you are a beginner or even a more experienced hobbyist but not interested in dropping as much money down on your gear, then there is still a great Canon low light camera for you. The Rebel T7 is a fun and functional camera that performs surprisingly well when you consider how inexpensive it is. Don’t expect top of the line performance but you will still get great image quality and a decent AF system with this bad boy. I had not shot a Rebel line camera in a while but when testing for this article I have to admit that I was impressed with the overall performance of this model. It really was fun to shoot with and if you practice I bet you will also be surprised with how good your photos will be with this camera.
